A New Zealand business started by a World War I soldier with a penchant for European food is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year.

In 1944, Bill Aitken founded William Aitken & Co to import and market food from Europe.

He left school at 16 to join the army and fought in the trenches in France and Belgium during World War I.

His grandson, Graham Aitken, now William Aitken & Co's managing director, said during that time Aitken made many French contacts and developed an appreciation of European food.
